Pompeii in the shade of Umbrella Pines
I found this image captivating, to me it encapsulates all of the drama of Pompeii in one single frame. The beautiful unearthed Amphitheatre of Pompeii (Anfiteatro do Pompeii), originally built in 70AD, displaying the tunnels where many a roman would have wondered through ready to be entertained by gladiators. The Grand Palaestra on the left hides its long forgotten training secrets behind high walls and battlements. Both structures divided by a winding path shaded by the miraculous umbrella pines which found their way back into the light after being released from under up to 6m of volcanic ash. In the distance you can see the now dormant Mount Vesuvius, looking innocent in the afternoon sun.
